Overview
Responsible for assisting with the implementation of a recreation camp program for school age children with special needs. Responsible for making recommendations for adaptations to meet the needs of the children with special needs. Provides guidance to the children in areas of personal care and behavioral issues.
Responsibilities- Assists Camp Supervisor with planning, promoting, organizing and implementing daily activities, special events, field trips, etc.
- Organizes and leads a variety of small and large group activities each week; adapts programs to include all campers.
- Supervises children in daily camp activities at all times.
- Provides emotional support and encouragement to campers.
- Assists with cleaning up after all activities.
- Responsible for reporting any accidents/incidents to the Camp Supervisor.
- Provides personal care, feeding, and toileting for campers as required.
- Ensures that safety standards are maintained at all times.
- Promotes communication with site supervisor and the parents/guardians of camp participants.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Current college student or a recent college/university graduate preferred. Must have at least 1 to 2 years of experience in Special Education, Therapeutic Recreation or related field working with children, specifically children with special needs preferred; or any equivalent education combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Must exercise considerable tact and courtesy when interacting with program participants, parents and support staff.
A consistent and reliable attendance record throughout the 4-week program is required.
Must be available to work a revised schedule when needed.
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
This job is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment checks to include criminal history, background and DMV record checks.
Ability to work with children with special needs that may include special medical conditions, dietary concerns, and/or behavioral problems.
Must have excellent communication skills. Must have good leadership skills. Must be creative and energetic.
Camp runs for 4 weeks from June 23rd through July 18th. Hours of work are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.
Position is work as required, no benefits.
Must be physically able to operate common office equipment such as personal computers, typewriters, copiers, calculators, etc. Work will involve both sitting and standing. Requires regular and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking/running over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, kneeling, leaping, jumping down, standing in place or continual walking, lifting and carrying of moderate to heavy items (including people) on a consistent basis.
There is occasional lifting of boxes, usually nothing weighing any more than 15-20 pounds.
