Job Title:
Site Safety Officer (SSHO / Safety Officer)
Job Description
The Site Safety Officer (SSHO) will support an on-site construction project in Blackstone, VA by implementing and enforcing safety policies, conducting regular inspections and audits, and promoting a proactive safety culture. This role focuses on incident prevention, compliance with OSHA and client safety requirements, and continuous coaching of site crews to ensure safe work practices throughout the project.
Responsibilities
* Implement and enforce site safety policies and procedures in alignment with OSHA construction standards and project requirements.
* Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of the construction site, equipment, and work practices to identify and correct hazards.
* Lead and facilitate toolbox talks and other safety meetings to communicate safety expectations, lessons learned, and best practices.
* Manage incident prevention efforts by monitoring work activities, identifying at-risk behaviors, and taking corrective action as needed.
* Ensure full compliance with OSHA regulations, EM 385-1-1 (if applicable), and client safety standards for the project.
* Coach construction crews on safe work practices and proper use of equipment, providing guidance and feedback in a respectful and consistent manner.
* Document safety inspections, findings, corrective actions, and follow-up to maintain accurate and complete safety records.
* Support quality control efforts by coordinating with project teams to ensure safety and quality requirements align with construction activities.
* Participate in planning and pre-task coordination to identify safety risks and implement appropriate controls before work begins.
* Collaborate with construction management and site leadership to address safety concerns and continuously improve the safety program.
Essential Skills
* At least 3 years of construction safety experience, appropriate to the complexity of the project and site.
* Strong working knowledge of OSHA construction standards and industry best practices.
* Demonstrated experience conducting safety inspections and audits on active construction sites.
* Proven ability to coach crews on safe work practices and enforce compliance respectfully and consistently.
* Experience supporting site safety on construction projects, including coordination with construction management and quality control.
* Ability to interpret and apply safety regulations, standards, and project-specific safety requirements.
* Strong communication skills to lead toolbox talks, safety briefings, and on-the-spot coaching.
* Attention to detail and strong documentation skills for recording inspections, findings, and corrective actions.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
* OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification strongly preferred.
* Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications.
* SSHO qualification for federal projects, where applicable.
* Familiarity with EM 385-1-1 requirements for USACE, NAVFAC, or other federal construction work.
* Background in construction, construction safety, or construction management.
* Experience working with quality control teams on construction projects.
* Ability to work effectively with diverse field teams and project stakeholders to promote a strong safety culture.
Work Environment
This role is based on an active construction project site in Blackstone, VA. The Site Safety Officer will spend the majority of time in the field, conducting inspections, observing work activities, and engaging directly with crews. The work environment includes typical construction site conditions such as outdoor exposure, varying weather, noise, and active heavy equipment and trades work. The position requires being on-site during project working hours and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with site safety requirements.

This is a Contract position based out of Crewe, VA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $90000.00/hr.
