Building Plans Reviewer

Under general supervision, performs plan review in the Building Department. Work involves review of building permits and plans for compliance with Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC). Work involves review of all residential and commercial plans submitted with the building permit application for a variety of life safety, structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire alarms and fire sprinkler installations in accordance with the USBC.

Duties would also include review of third party and special inspection reports. Employee would be expected to have the skills necessary to perform inspection on permitted work if required. Employee must also exercise considerable tact, courtesy and firmness in dealing with property owners, contractors and the general public. This position reports to the Building Official.

Possesses considerable knowledge of modern electrical, structural, life safety, plumbing, mechanical, and fire safety features common to residential and commercial construction practices. Review of the proposed designs to ensure compliance with adopted codes. Has considerable knowledge of the state and local ordinances and codes administered through the County, including zoning and subdivision regulations and processes. Has a general knowledge of the geographical layout of the County.

Has considerable knowledge of the approved methods and practices involved in the installation, construction, repair and maintenance of various code referenced standards. Able to deal tactfully and firmly with contractors, property owners and the general public. Able to physically maneuver on ladders, scaffolding, structural members and in cramped quarters to accomplish thorough building inspections. Effective oral and written communication skills required.
