Job Duties

The Science Museum of Virginia is seeking a passionate and curious intern to support our Science Within Reach Initiative, a program dedicated to breaking down barriers to museum access related to disability, income, and language. We believe museum inclusion means learning together alongside classmates, friends, and families through engaging experiences offered across multiple modes, media, and platforms.

Working under the guidance of the Community Engagement Coordinator, the intern will help expand the Museum's outreach to new and existing communities. Responsibilities include auditing accessibility tools and making recommendations, researching and attending community cultural events, and strengthening the Museum's community network database. The intern will also gather insights on community needs and produce a meaningful document to inform future outreach and engagement goals.

All Summer Interns receive an insider view of museum careers while building leadership skills and hands-on experience. The internship includes meetings with senior leaders, direct project work, professional development opportunities, participation in science and museum "Career Exploration Breakfast" presentations, and valuable networking experiences.

Internship Commitment

This is a paid internship position at $15 per hour. Interns are expected to complete a minimum of 300 hours between mid-May and mid-August. Students receiving academic credit should note that required hours and schedules are determined by their academic program. All interns must be able to participate in required training sessions associated with the position. Internship is scheduled to start on May 26, 2026.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at the time of application or the start of the internship. All submissions must include a résumé and a cover letter describing your interest in the specific internship and directly addressing the qualifications listed below.

The ideal candidate is comfortable developing creative solutions to access and inclusion challenges and enjoys working with people of all backgrounds, particularly individuals with disabilities and other underrepresented populations. Candidates must demonstrate maturity, flexibility, reliability, and the ability to work independently, follow supervision, meet deadlines, and accept constructive feedback. A strong interest in making informal education accessible in a professional and positive manner is required.

Experience working with children of various ages.

Additional Considerations

Prior experience or interest in community engagement and relationship-building is plus. ASL or Spanish language competencies is a plus. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace is a plus.
