Title: Assistant Principal
Primary Function: Assists in the administration of all aspects of the total school program for Alleghany Highlands Public Schools by providing educational leadership for students and staff consistent with division goals.
Qualifications:
- Candidate must possess or be eligible for a Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement as a Principal or Administration/Supervision K-12.
- Have demonstrated the professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the community.
Reports To: Building Principal
Responsibilities- Conduct instructional supervision and evaluation including classroom and teaching observations for assigned areas.
- Implement curriculum and educational objectives consistent with goals.
- Advise teachers regarding instruction, classroom management, and student discipline.
- Provide leadership in initiating in-service programs and organizational improvements.
- Provide a climate conducive to effective communications through faculty meetings, committees, and individual conferences.
- Coordinate the use of subject matter specialists, resource teachers, and other resource personnel.
- Assist the principal in coordinating and administering pupil personnel services and maintaining high expectations for daily operations.
- Maintain effective discipline and foster a safe and positive environment for all students and staff.
- Ensure adequate supervision of students.
- Coordinate and supervise student activities and events including before/after school activities, as requested.
- Coordinate services to students such as guidance, health, special education.
- Participate in eligibility meetings.
- Ensure that all staff members keep and submit accurate and up-to-date records, as required.
- Ensure that the Student Code of Ethics and Character Counts Pillars are displayed and emphasized throughout the school.
- Maintain school rules and regulations which conform to the regulations of the School Board of Alleghany County and the State Board of Education.
Additional Responsibilities (continued):
- Assist in school scheduling; assist principals in administering staff personnel procedures.
- Participate in reviewing applications, interviewing, placement, and evaluation of staff as requested; contact substitutes as needed; complete required reports; promote a healthy and safe work environment.
- Develop and participate in staff development and in-service training programs; assist in administering financial and building needs of the school.
- Establish building maintenance schedules; maintain inventories of furniture and equipment; supervise use of school facilities by agencies and organizations.
- Discipline and safety: implement a discipline policy that fosters a safe and positive environment; ensure adequate supervision of students.
- Hold regular faculty meetings; maintain effective communication with staff; encourage professional growth and in-service training.
- Maintain sensitivity to individual staff situations; develop an environment conducive to learning.
- Notify superintendent if unable to perform duties and designate a substitute; assign staff to duties necessary for efficient operation.
- Oversee records accuracy and submissions; coordinate with Athletic Director on staffing, supervision, and scheduling of athletic events; coordinate with extracurricular sponsors/coaches on supervision and scheduling.
- Recognize and reward student achievements; communicate with students and parents; maintain and distribute bulletins and communiqués.
- Maintain records of meetings; confer with students and groups; supervise activities and events; manage school facilities for instructional, extracurricular, and community use.
- Analyze data on student achievement; involve community, parents, and volunteers in evaluating the school program.
- Participate in committees as directed by the superintendent; create a supportive learning environment and protect assets and facilities.
- Ensure compliance with applicable policies and regulations; maintain the school handbook and standards of conduct.
- Occasional travel with students on school field trips may be required; expect as-needed supervision duties for school operations.
Terms of Employment: Twelve-month contract, Exempted FLSA status. Salary: $78,073 to $96,727 per year.
