Job SummaryThe High School French Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, rigorous instruction in French language and culture to students in grades 9–12. The teacher implements lesson plans that promote proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, while fostering an appreciation for Francophone cultures. This role requires creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment, assessing student progress, and using data to inform instruction.
The French Teacher collaborates with colleagues, parents, and administrators to support student achievement and contribute to the overall success of the school's language program.
- Teaches skills and knowledge in foreign language instruction utilizing the division/state curriculum.
- Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations.
- Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials that are compatible with the basic division's instructional philosophy and congruent with course/SOL standards.
- Adapts the curriculum to provide individual, small-group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual student and identified subgroups of students.
- Develops the pupil's understanding and appreciation of the culture of countries where the studied language is spoken.
- Evaluates each student's performance in meeting the course standards in comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing the world language.
- Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other record‑keeping activities as necessary.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members to assess and help students solve learning, health, and attitude problems.
- Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
- Supervises students in assigned out‑of‑classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- Participates in faculty committees and sponsors student activities.
- Administers testing in accordance with division testing practices.
- Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities Required)- Must possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s in education or a related field.
- Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement to teach Foreign Language/French.
- Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in regular classrooms, outdoors, and on the phone;
physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
