Health & PE Teacher – 195‑day Full‑time

Potomac Shores Middle School, Dumfries, VA

Job Summary

This position plans and implements an instructional program; manages student behavior; assesses and evaluates student achievement; modifies instructional activities; and provides related educational services. The teacher serves as a general education classroom teacher in single‑grade, multi‑grade, or specialty‑oriented classes, and may be assigned to labs requiring greater monitoring.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Continuously assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment documentation.
  • Plan and implement instructional strategies and activities, determining appropriate materials, managing learning time, and utilizing multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Manage learner behavior in the instructional setting and assist in managing behavior in other parts of the school.
  • Coordinate instructional activities with professional staff both inside and outside the school to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Work in a self‑contained, team, departmental, itinerant capacity, or conduct off‑school site visits to monitor students and confer with employers or site instructors.
  • Participate in in‑service, professional development activities, and staff meetings as required.
  • Foster partnerships and maintain continuous communication with parents, in written and oral form, to keep them informed of student progress.
  • Communicate instructional expectations to students continuously to keep them informed of progress.
  • Assign work to and supervise instructional assistants, parent, and student volunteers.
  • Serve at two or more schools on a regular basis as itinerant.
  • Support or participate in school‑wide student activities and social events.
  • Monitor student behavior in non‑instructional areas, intervene to control and modify disruptive behavior, and report to the appropriate administrator.
  • Collaborate with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out school‑wide instructional or related activities as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the instructional process, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment for the assigned instructional specialty.
  • Knowledge of pre‑adolescent and adolescent growth and development.
  • Knowledge of the Prince William County Curriculum and the school division’s mission, goals, and organization.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Skill in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong human‑relations skills.
  • For foreign‑language instruction, proficiency in the oral and written communications of that language.
  • For choral‑music instruction, ability to teach singing/choral techniques, proficiency on piano, and ability to distinguish pitches and tone quality.
  • For instrumental‑music instruction, proficiency in one or more instruments and ability to model correct playing techniques.
  • For visual‑art instruction, a personal portfolio demonstrating artistic ability and experience in a variety of media.
  • For career and technical education instruction, journey‑level proficiency in the trade is required, with on‑the‑job journey, lead, or supervisory experience desirably.
  • Must be eligible for the Virginia State Certification Program and hold a teacher endorsement appropriate to the assigned duties.
  • If assigned off‑site tasks or serving as itinerant, possession of a valid automobile operator’s license in Virginia.
Education and Credentials

Minimum educational requirement:
Bachelor’s degree.
Certification:
Collegiate professional, postgraduate professional, or appropriate vocational certification/license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with endorsement(s) required for the teaching assignment(s).

Work Environment

Indoor classroom environment; work is performed in a standard office or classroom setting. Employees may experience minor environmental inconveniences such as noise, computer screens, crowded conditions, or heating/cooling issues.

Other Requirements

Must be able to work in‑person and physically report for work on site.
Must participate in the annual professional growth planning process.
