POSITION TITLE: DEAN OF STUDENTS - 12 MONTH CONTRACT

SALARY: TEACHER SCALE COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE (BASED ON FY27 SCALE)

DEPARTMENT: J.S. RUSSELL MIDDLE SCHOOL

Position Overview: Brunswick County Public Schools is seeking a dynamic, student-centered leader to serve as Dean of Students at J. S. Russell Middle School. The Dean of Students will work closely with the Principal and school staff to cultivate a positive, structured, achievement-oriented, and safe learning environment that supports the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success of all students.

Direct Accountability and Reporting: The Dean of Students will be evaluated annually based upon the job description, division expectations, school and personal goals, and performance objectives specific to the position.

Education
  • Hold or be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful full-time teaching experience required
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success in supporting student achievement and fostering positive school culture
  • Strong knowledge of behavior management practices, student support systems, and school operations
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including students, staff, families, and community partners
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and leadership skills
  • Ability to analyze behavioral and academic data to identify trends and support interventions
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, professionalism, and student success
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serving as the primary contact and administrator for student discipline and behavioral matters
  • Working closely with the Principal and leadership team to establish and maintain a positive, structured, achievement-oriented, and innovative school culture
  • Supporting teachers in maintaining consistently high academic and behavioral expectations for all students
  • Assisting in the development, implementation, and monitoring of Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and student support strategies
  • Serving as a resource to teachers regarding classroom management, student relationships, school culture, and discipline practices
  • Supporting school-wide behavior systems and reinforcing consistent implementation of school expectations
  • Leading and supporting behavioral crisis intervention and acute student behavioral concerns
  • Monitoring and maintaining accurate discipline documentation, including conferences, interventions, suspensions, and parent communication records
  • Collaborating with students, families, teachers, counselors, and support staff to improve student attendance, punctuality, and engagement
  • Supervising breakfast, lunch, transitions, dismissal, assemblies, and other school-wide operations to ensure student safety and appropriate conduct
  • Managing in-school disciplinary procedures and after-school detention programs
  • Proactively circulating throughout classrooms and hallways to monitor student behavior and support a positive school climate
  • Coordinating school culture initiatives, restorative practices, and student accountability measures
  • Assisting with parent workshops, student support meetings, and school improvement initiatives
  • Supporting intervention efforts for at-risk students and students needing additional behavioral or social-emotional support
  • Ensuring the physical environment of the school reflects professionalism, positivity, and student achievement
  • Demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness in addressing student and school needs
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Principal or Division Administration
Work Environment

Duties are typically performed in a classroom/office or school setting. The noise level is generally moderate and consistent with an active secondary school environment. Occasional travel for conferences, field trips or school related activities may occur.
