Job Summary
This position plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students in grades K‑5. The teacher manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, modifies instructional activities as required, carries out student monitoring and control activities, and performs related duties as assigned. The teacher operates under the general supervision of a principal and may be assigned to reading or technology labs.
EssentialResponsibilities
- Implement an instructional program that provides appropriate learning for each student by differentiating instruction.
- Plan and deliver instruction in adherence to the Prince William County Curriculum documents for the assigned teaching assignments.
- Assess student abilities relative to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
- Plan appropriate instructional and/or learning strategies and activities, including determining appropriate principles of learning, classroom organizational structures, and kind and level of materials.
- Manage the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure a conducive learning environment and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school, school grounds, and during lunch; this will not include duty‑free lunch, except in emergency situations; no student should be left alone.
- Cooperate with and participate in the planning and evaluation of the school program.
- Request the assistance of resource personnel as needed and work cooperatively to ensure an appropriate learning environment for all students.
- Participate in the professional development program of the school and School Division.
- Coordinate instructional activities and collaborate with other professional staff both school and non‑school‑based, as required, to maximize learning opportunities.
- Follow the ethics of the profession.
- Support actively a parent/teacher or parent/student organization and promote parent/teacher partnerships.
- Enforce policies and regulations established by the Prince William County School Board and staff in accordance with any program guidelines.
- Supervise pupil activities in buildings and on grounds during and after school hours, and be responsible for the conduct and safety of students in the classroom and on school grounds; no group of students should be left unattended.
- Demonstrate prompt and accurate written communications and reports.
- Adhere to county and school disciplinary procedures.
Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Qualities, Skills & Knowledge- Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of grade level(s) or instructional specialty(ies) to which assigned.
- Knowledge of child growth and development.
- Knowledge of Prince William County Public Schools curricula and program of studies related to assignments and public school mission, goals, and organization.
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
- Ability to plan and implement lessons using the Standards‑Based Instructional Planning Process and based on Division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of assigned students.
- Ability to utilize multi‑media and computer technology, as appropriate.
- Skills in oral and written communication; excellent human relations skills.
- If teaching music: ability to teach through demonstrating singing/choral techniques, movement, technique on pitched and unpitched instruments, and proficiency on the piano; ability to distinguish pitches and tone quality.
- If teaching visual art: a personal portfolio demonstrating artistic ability and experience in a variety of media.
Minimum:
Bachelor's Degree.
State:
Collegiate Professional, Post Graduate Professional, or appropriate vocational license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with endorsement(s) required for teaching assignments. Other:
If assigned off‑site tasks or serving as an itinerant, possession of a valid automobile operator’s license to operate a vehicle in Virginia is required.
The work environment is primarily indoor, in standard office, classroom, or indoor environment. The teacher’s essential functions are performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions, although employees may be exposed to minor inconveniences such as occasional noise, exposure to computer screens, crowded working conditions, and/or minor heating, cooling or ventilation problems.
