Position: Cosmetology Teacher SY 2026-2027
Location: Lovingston

SUMMARY:

Provides instruction that utilizes a variety of teaching methods for courses related to cosmetology to students in grades 9-12. Provides related instruction with field, laboratory, cooperative work or other occupational experiences that is appropriate to the career objectives. Supervises cosmetology students with all related activities including Skills

USA.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

1. Meets and instructs classes in the locations and at the times designated.

2. Plans a program of study that adheres to the prescribed CTE competencies and, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of the students.

3. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.

4. Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor. Daily teaching objectives shall: (a) identify the learning expected of students; (b) keep students engaged in learning tasks; (c) allow the teacher to spend a majority of time in direct teaching activities.(d) provide for assessment of student learning.

5. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior which fosters mutual respect and courtesy.

6. Prepares students for success on relevant VDOE approved credentialing exams.

7. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and the like, to communicate these objectives to students.

8. Employs a variety of instructional techniques, materials, and activities consistent with the interests, needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.

9. Strives to implement by instruction and action the school district's and school philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.

10. Observes for possible learning disabilities of students and refers for diagnosis, seeking the assistance of district specialists, as required.

11. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

12. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations.

13. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct.

14. Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.

15. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s) and, cooperatively with designated persons, evaluates their job performance.

16. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.

17. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.

18. Assesses the progress of students and reports to students and parents at appropriate times, evaluating students' work promptly and constructively and certifying whether each student has mastered applicable learning objectives.

19. Provides a personal model for effective communications through language usage, grammar, and spelling and personal appearance.

20. Submits promptly and accurately all reports required by the Principal and Superintendent.

21. Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal.

22. Performs such other duties as are deemed necessary by the School Board and Superintendent for the efficient and successful operation of the school system.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages children in the classroom and instructional assistants if they are provided. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this unit. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

1. Must be a currently licensed Cosmetologist in Virginia

2. Must be in possession of or eligible for a VDOE Teaching License with an endorsement in Cosmetology

3. Minimum five years of cosmetology operations and/or other industry-related work experience preferred

4. Knowledge of cosmetology curriculum, effective instructional techniques, instructional materials and equipment

5. Experience connecting students to work-based learning opportunities within and outside of the school program

6. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
