Biology & Chemistry Instructor (some flexibility in course assignment; average class size is less than 15).

Hargrave Military Academy is a boarding/day school serving boys in the grades 6 to 13 (middle to high school to post-grad). We strive to provide the finest academics in a boarding school utilizing a military structure. Providing an academically challenging and personalized instruction for every cadet is a Hargrave tradition stretching back to our founding in 1909. A Hargrave education is not limited to academic pursuits, but empasses a whole-person development model supported by the pillars of academics, character, spiritual growth and athletics/fitness.

Our focus is on meeting each student's specific needs within the framework of a college preparatory environment. Hargrave is a community and a family of instructors, administrators, parents and mentors all working jointly to provide an environment conducive to learning, growing and enabling students to reach their full potential.

The successful candidate must possess the following:
  • Degree in Content Area (Science) or a related field is required
  • Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with fellow faculty to develop, modify, and execute integrated projects as part of the curriculum.
  • Ability and willingness to act as a Coach, Advisor, or contributor to extracurricular activities (clubs, sports, activities that are part of the boarding school experience)
  • Periodic evening and weekend duties (study hall, chaperone activities)
  • Ability and willingness to work individually with students individually or in small groups
  • Strong ability to communicate with our young men and their parents
  • Dedication and commitment to Hargrave's mission
  • Eligible for provisional or professional licensure in Virginia. Instructors may be hired under the local licensure law for Virginia teacher endorsements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Current professional licensure in Virginia or at least twelve semester credit hours in professional education courses as defined by accreditation guidelines or the equivalent in experience in teaching in an accredited school.
  • Graduate degree
  • A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience in an accredited school.
  • Interest or experience in STEM activities
  • Interest or experience in athletics
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development in independent boarding and/or single-sex educational institutions.
Hargrave's Academic Program is looking for positive and energetic attitudes, leadership and mentoring skills and a desire to serve the Academy's young men.

Responsibilities:
  • Each instructor will teach a maximum of five classes as assigned by the Academic Dean. Instruction in the classroom will be commensurate with the school's stated philosophy, objectives and purposes.
  • Each instructor will serve as an advisor to specific cadets assigned by the Director of Guidance. In this capacity, the instructor will provide the student with assistance in dealing with academic and academy life and serve as a liaison with the student's parents.
  • Each instructor will coach or sponsor at least one activity as assigned by the Assistant Head of School in conjunction with the Athletic Director. Additionally, instructors will be required, based upon rosters maintained by the Student Activities Director to chaperone events each semester.
  • Each instructor is responsible for classroom management for assigned classes and strives to maintain consistency across the faculty in knowing and supporting the Academy's mission, philosophy, and standards both in and out of the classroom. Faculty members are expected to be role models for Cadets in our focus on development of the whole person academically, spiritually, physically with a focus on development of character in every aspect of the Cadet Experience  faculty is expected to be cognizant of all rules and regulations that govern the corps and the faculty.
