Job Description

As a part-time (1500-hour) Outreach and Communications Coordinator, this position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing outreach and Extension activities that communicate the results and impact of research and demonstration programs at the Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SVAREC). The role supports programs focused on forage-based livestock production and forestry systems, with the goal of improving the sustainability of agricultural and forestry practices across Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region through effective knowledge sharing.

This position leads the development and delivery of outreach efforts for SVAREC, including field days, workshops, tours, and stakeholder events, and supports communication of research and Extension activities to farmer, student, and public audiences. The role also develops written and digital communications, including the SVAREC newsletter and outreach publications, to increase awareness and understanding of SVAREC programs and their impact. A secondary focus of the position is to enhance public awareness and appreciation of agricultural and forestry systems in the Shenandoah Valley region, including the historical significance of the McCormick Farm.

The position works closely with SVAREC faculty and staff, Virginia Cooperative Extension agents and specialists, and industry partners to support outreach and engagement efforts. This position will also coordinate with the CALS Marketing and Communications team for access to tools, templates, and guidance, and to ensure alignment with Virginia Tech brand standards and communications practices.

About the Shenandoah Valley Agricultural Research and Extension Center (SVAREC):

SVAREC is located about 65 miles north of Roanoke near the town of Steeles Tavern. Formally known as the McCormick Farm, the site was the home of Cyrus McCormick, inventor of the grain reaper. The SVAREC supports research and Extension programs in beef cattle, forage, sheep, and forestry production. In addition, the Virginia Sheep Producers Association Performance Ram Lamb test is conducted annually at the AREC.

Center programs are key sources of information locally and statewide for progressive beef, sheep, forage, and forest producers. The Center comprises approximately 878 acres of land (with additional leases) plus livestock facilities. For more information, visit: https://(Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)..
