School-based Substitute Teacher – Western Albemarle High School – 2026-27 School Year
Starting Date: Aug 3, 2026
Responsibilities- Serve in the absence of the classroom teacher.
- Deliver the lesson plan created and left by the classroom teacher.
- Meet and instruct the students in the locations and at the time designated.
- Develop and maintain the physical environment of the classroom that is conducive to effective learning within the limits of resources provided by the system.
- Prepare for classes assigned and show evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor or absent teacher.
- Encourage students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain and uphold school and county policies and procedures.
- Maintain records as required by law, system policy, and administrative regulations.
- Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules and administrative regulations.
- Cooperate with other members of the staff.
- Provide information and seek clarity from school administration or designee regarding questions related to students, instruction, and/or other concerns.
- Establish and maintain cooperative professional relations with others.
- Perform related duties as assigned by the administration in accordance with the school/system policies and practices.
Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward students; willingness to learn specialized instructional/management techniques; ability to communicate and develop effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff; willingness to seek and maintain CPR certification.
Education and ExperienceCandidates must hold a high school diploma or equivalent. Priority will be given to candidates who have prior teaching experience or are eligible for a Virginia Teaching License.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkDuties performed typically in school settings to include classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 40 pounds. Occasional travel with students on field trips and movement of students by wheelchairs may be required. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio‑visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required. Occasional attendance at parent conferences, building‑level meetings, and division‑wide meetings and training activities beyond normal assigned hours is necessary.
Daily close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required. Regular contact with other staff members, parents and medical professionals may be required. Contacts with community and division‑level staff may require considerable tact and diplomacy.
Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
