Program Overview

Chesapeake Bay Governor's School (CBGS) is a regional program for high ability 10th-12th grade students in the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck region of Virginia. CBGS serves approximately 240 students from 14 counties through a shared‑day program with the students' home district high schools.

CBGS faculty provide direct instruction each school day from 8:00-10:30 a.m. and are expected to plan collaboratively with colleagues, provide extra student support in individual or small group tutoring (sometimes traveling to the students' district high schools for meetings), and lead field experiences, including occasional overnight and weekend trips (approximately 3 per year), a hallmark of the CBGS program.

Teaching Responsibilities

This position will teach a range of courses at the Warsaw campus, including Foundations of Science, Marine and Environmental Science I, and Marine and Environmental Science II, based on program needs and candidate strengths.

Job Type

Full-time, 10-month contract, FLSA exempt.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Virginia collegiate or postgraduate professional license or eligibility for a provisional license in one or more of the following areas: biology, marine science, environmental science, or earth science.
  • Master's degree
  • Sufficient graduate credits in Biology and/or Marine and Environmental Science area (CBGS students receive dual enrollment credits through Rappahannock Community College), or the capacity to complete the required graduate credits within one year of hire. If you are not sure if your credentials suffice to teach dual enrollment, we will review your resume and transcripts. Some financial assistance may be available to support acquiring the required graduate credits.
  • Ability to lead students in outdoor and often aquatic settings, including hiking, kayaking, field data collection, and extended field experiences.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in field-based environmental education, outdoor instruction, or experiential learning programs.
  • Gifted education endorsement.
  • Teaching experience (or equivalent professional experience).
Essential Functions
  • Relate positively to high school students, with particular emphasis on the needs of gifted and high achieving learners.
  • Plan and deliver effective lessons that meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning; communicate objectives effectively to students; establish high expectations for academic success and classroom behavior; employ a variety of instructional techniques and blended learning strategies; and assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis.
  • Plan and support field experiences that may include moderate physical activity (e.g., hiking, kayaking, carrying field equipment).
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and parents.
  • Participate in faculty and/or department meetings, professional learning sessions, and weekend field experience trips with students.
Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires walking and occasionally requires sitting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly;

hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work has no exposure to environmental conditions;

work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, playground, classroom, light traffic).
