Position: Coordinator for the Mentorship and Adaptability Program
Location: Wise

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, located in southwestern Virginia, is accepting applications for a Coordinator for the Mentorship and Adaptability Program position. The Coordinator for the Mentorship and Adaptability Program (MAP) position works with low income and academically at need students to facilitate a sense of belonging and personal development. The Coordinator for MAP trains and supports MAP mentors, plans events, and provides direct support for students.

The Coordinator works with the Director of the Academic Success Center in recruitment and marketing for the program and partners with other student success offices to promote finding personal identity, community engagement, and a strong support network for students. This position works as a staff member in the Academic Success Center and reports to the Director of the Academic Success Center.

The center is an office within Academic Affairs and works to promote the retention of students as well as their individual successes.

This is a grant funded position that is funded through June 30, 2027. Salary is $45,000.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Supervise and train peer mentors to ensure timeliness and participation in meetings and events
  • Encourage mentors to build relationships with students through social events, workshops, and individual meetings with students
  • Support mentors in their own development through training and filtered opportunities to build their resumes
  • Coordinate workshops for the mentors to present on subjects such as study skills to assist at risk students to be better prepared for courses
  • Organize and attend social events for the program
  • Build relationships with other success offices on campus such as Career Discovery and Admissions to connect students with mentorship opportunities for educational and career success
  • Prepare campaigns with the Academic Success Center and Office of Student Engagement to encourage participation in the program
  • Collaborate and refer students to various student support resources (e.g., academic advising, disability services, counseling, etc.) and academic departments (i.e., faculty)
  • Monitor student progress through early alert program and midterm grade tracking
  • Compile mentor program participation data for biannual reports to the State Council of Higher Education
  • Work with the Office of Financial Aid to ensure the list of students in the program is accurate and aligns with program aims
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to perform primary duties and responsibilities of the position.

Ability to efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) and student information systems.

Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.

Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, such as academically at risk or low-income students.

Ability to encourage students to become engaged with the college community and their peers.

Demonstrated commitment to empowering students to improve their academic and social skills.

Qualifications
  • Education:

    Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with high school or college students in an educational setting
  • Valid Driver's License
