Job DescriptionJob Title: Special Education Teacher
Contract Length: 191 days

Job Summary: The position is responsible for special needs students, creating a classroom environment that develops competencies in academic, social, and motor skills.
- Implements the assigned program of study.
- Develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Monitors student progress toward achieving instructional objectives and goals outlined in the IEPs.
- Maintains and upgrades professional skills.
- Teaches rules of conduct.
- Maintains order in the classroom and on the playground when applicable.
- Counsels pupils when adjustment and academic problems arise.
- Discusses pupils' academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents. Keeps attendance and grade records as required by the school.
- Coordinates class field trips when applicable. Works cooperatively with the total staff.
- Assumes responsibility for the care of materials, equipment, and facilities.
- Assumes responsibility for maintaining a neat, safe environment and promotes positive interaction among students.
- Encourages self-direction and self-motivation and demonstrates knowledge of the subject(s) being taught.
- Utilizes a variety of appropriate materials and resources.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Principal and the Special Education Director.

- Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field.
- Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement to teach special education.
- Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Physical Requirements:
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone;
physical agility to lift to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
