Position: Anticipated Mathematics Teacher-Secondary SY 26/27
Location: Cape Charles

Position Purpose

To develop students' interest, abilities, talents and skills for education and understanding by implementing district-approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; developing lesson plans; modeling the necessary skills to perform assigned tasks; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

Salary

$51,376 – $78,828 (Commensurate with experience). Salary specifics can be found on the NCPS website according to the current salary scale.

Essential Functions
  • Know and effectively communicate the Division philosophy and mission.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom fairly and justly.
  • Participate in school management and share responsibility for the total school program.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Plan a program of study that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of students as much as possible.
  • Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students, employing a variety of instructional techniques and media.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, establish and communicate clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Establish learning objectives consistent with an appraisal of student needs and the NCPS curriculum framework.
  • Plan regular, timely parent communication.
  • Build outstanding relationships with students.
  • Plan engaging lessons aligned with the taught and tested curriculum.
  • Implement interventions for students who struggle.
  • Consistently meet and instruct assigned classes at designated times.
  • Create a classroom environment that encourages student involvement and achievement of learning objectives.
  • Identify special needs and seek assistance from Division specialists.
  • Prepare for classes and show written evidence of preparation in accordance with Division and State guidelines.
  • Utilize instructional methods, resources, and evaluation techniques that motivate and enable learning.
  • Take necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, NCPS policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Set high academic and behavioral expectations.
  • Be available to students and parents outside instructional hours when reasonably requested.
  • Exert leadership in collaboration with school and Division staff.
  • Assist in selecting books, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Establish respectful relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and the community.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers.
  • Appraise one's effectiveness and demonstrate application of acquired knowledge and skills to improve performance.
  • Share responsibility for extra‑curricular activities.
  • Promote professional growth through ongoing reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework.
  • Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned or delegated by the school administrator.
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

Use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Work Schedule

Standard teacher work schedule as set forth in the Teachers' Contract.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of current instructional teaching methods and educational pedagogy, and ability to differentiate instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of curriculum and concepts.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Proficiency with computer networking systems and software applications.
  • Organizational and coordination skills.
  • Effective communication with students and parents.
  • Self-evaluation and professional growth engagement.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
Physical and Mental Demands
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
  • Manual dexterity to use a telephone and enter data into a computer.
  • Vision to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without aids.
  • Auditory ability to hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone.
  • Verbal communication in audible tones for clear understanding.
  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
  • Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.
