STEP Program Teaching Assistant – Western Albemarle High School – 2026‑27 School Year

Short Term Education Program (STEP):
Alternative to out‑of‑school suspension.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide a safe and supportive environment for students assigned to STEP to complete academic work provided by teachers.
- Collaborate with the STEP school counselor to ensure social and emotional needs are met.
- Maintain communication with school administrators.
- Implement STEP curriculum.
- Supervise students during in‑school suspension, break and lunch periods, and free time.
- Collect, arrange, and make assignments according to each student, including completing student assignment sheets.
- Record attendance and make appropriate reports.
- Review and enforce rules.
- Enter student data on the computer database and perform clerical duties to support quarterly reports.
- Carry out instructional plans as designated by the classroom teacher, including IEPs where appropriate.
- Design classroom environment (instructional materials, bulletin boards).
- Assist teachers with classroom behavior control, discipline, and related instructional activities.
- Operate audio‑visual equipment and assist students with learning tasks.
- Assist in the physical movement of students between learning environments.
- Handle toileting, feeding, positioning, and medical related duties for students with special needs.
- Participate in team meetings and assist with related services (OT, PT, speech, adaptive PE, vision).
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the classroom teacher or principal.
- Ability to develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward all students.
- Willingness to learn specialized instructional and management techniques for disabled students.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to build effective relationships with students, parents, and staff.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in supporting a small group of students.
- High‑school graduate or equivalency and willingness to obtain CPR certification.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, including basic keyboard and filing training.

Position DetailsPosition Type:
Full‑time, 10 months per year.
Salary: $17.87 to $21.45 per hour.
