General Responsibilities

Assist administration and teachers in daily school management and student instruction. Perform clerical tasks such as typing, filing, records preparation, and office assignments. Observe and report on students’ behavior and learning. Provide support in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, or special education classrooms, monitoring basic personal and physical health needs and applying restraint as necessary. Follow detailed procedures closely.

Essential Tasks

Instruction Assistant / Behavior Specialist

  • Assist with individual and small group instruction as directed by the classroom teacher.
  • Support instructional activities including reading groups and library assistance.
  • Help students with special assignments or academic problems.
  • Support daily routine tasks such as cafeteria duty, bus duty, money collection, hall duty, and others.
  • Maintain order in the classroom and monitor students to keep them on task.
  • Prepare instructional materials as requested.
  • Encourage safety, work habits, and study habits.
  • Assist in fire drills and other building security procedures.
  • Escort students on field trips and school activities, including restroom assistance when needed.
  • Maintain bulletin boards, student records for attendance, lunch tickets, health charts, and classroom supplies.
  • Work with students requiring individual close attention.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining student behavior standards.
  • Alert the teacher to special needs of individual students.
  • Implement all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Perform related work as required.

Cafe Aide

  • Assist and monitor student behavior during lunch period.
  • Help students open and close prepared food packages.
  • Assist in preparation of lunch periods and wipe tables between periods.
  • Perform related work as required.

Librarian Assistant

  • Assist students with locating and using media center materials.
  • Circulate media center equipment and materials; operate equipment.
  • Assist with shelving returned books, correcting mis-shelved books, and labeling or mending books.
  • Implement all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Perform related work as required.

School Assistant

  • Perform office tasks such as photocopying, filing, answering the telephone, taking messages, and distributing mail.
  • Maintain confidential files.
  • Order supplies and coordinate printing needs.
  • Maintain records of student absences and unexcused absences.
  • Call parents if a student is absent.
  • Prepare files and records for entering and withdrawing students.
  • Implement all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
  • Perform related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

General knowledge of teaching practices, methods, and techniques used in classrooms, library, and school offices. Ability to maintain confidential information. Proficiency with standard office, library, and computer technology equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students, and associates.

Education and Experience

High school graduate or GED. Some experience working with children. Comparable training and experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications.

Physical Requirements

Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling. Ability to lift up to 10 pounds.
