Position: Library Reference Technician (Youth Services) (WAR/
Location: Yorktown

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical and reference assistance to children, teens, parents, teachers, and other library patrons.
  • Assist in planning and presenting Youth Services programs for infants, toddlers, pre‑school, school‑aged, and teen library patrons.
  • Staff the youth services desk, delivering excellent customer service and reader‑advisory assistance in person or over the phone.
  • Maintain the collection through shelf reading, shifting, and moving books and other library materials.
  • Prepare story times, displays, crafts, and other library programs.
  • Promote library programs, assist patrons with registration, and prepare promotional materials such as reading lists, bibliographies, and flyers.
  • Use library automated systems and operate library equipment.
  • Plan, organize, and present daily work, library programs, and special projects; set priorities, use time effectively, work independently, and meet deadlines.
  • Work a continual floating schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Physically lift boxes up to 50 pounds occasionally, push and pull library carts frequently, stoop and bend as required.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of high school diploma.
  • Experience working with children in libraries, schools, or daycares preferred.
  • General knowledge of children’s and teen literature.
  • General knowledge of personal computer skills and MS Office software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to interact and communicate with children, teens, and their parents in a pleasant and effective manner.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and present daily work, library programs, and special projects.
  • Ability to learn and operate library automated systems.
  • Ability to organize work, set priorities, use time effectively, work independently, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate and work well with other staff members.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment, lift boxes up to 50 pounds occasionally, push and pull library carts, and stoop and bend frequently.
  • Must be able to work a continual floating schedule as needed.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends when required.
