POSITION: Director of Compass Academy and Virtual Learning

POSITION SUMMARY: The Director of Compass Academy and Virtual Learning provides visionary leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for Middlesex County Public Schools' alternative education and virtual learning programs. The Director is responsible for ensuring equitable access to high-quality educational opportunities, supporting student achievement and graduation, managing virtual and alternative learning environments, coordinating academic advising and enrollment processes, and fostering student success through innovative instructional pathways.

The Director collaborates with students, families, staff, community partners, and division leadership to develop and implement programs that promote academic growth, postsecondary readiness, and positive student outcomes.

JOB TYPE: Full-Time CONTRACT: 12 Months FLSA STATUS: Exempt

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Hold or be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with Administration and Supervision endorsement.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful educational experience, including teaching, counseling, alternative education, virtual learning, or school leadership.
  • Demonstrated experience in program management, student support services, data analysis, and instructional leadership.
  • Strong knowledge of alternative education programs, virtual learning systems, graduation requirements, and student success strategies.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with students, families, staff, and community stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Program Leadership and Administration
  • Direct and oversee all operations of Compass Academy, division virtual learning programs, and homebound instructional services.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve programs, procedures, and services that support student achievement, graduation, and postsecondary readiness.
  • Manage program budgets, contracts, resources, technology platforms, records, and operational systems.
  • Establish program goals, monitor outcomes, and prepare required reports to support accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Safeguard the virtual learning against cheating, ensuring all students uphold a high standard of academic honesty.
  • Virtual Learning and Alternative Education Management
  • Coordinate enrollment, scheduling, course placement, progress monitoring, and completion of online coursework for Compass Academy students and division students participating in credit recovery or grade advancement.
  • Oversee virtual learning platforms, course offerings, instructional resources, and related contracts to ensure access, quality, compliance, and alignment with state requirements, graduation pathways, and division expectations.
  • Student Academic Planning and Support
  • Advise students and families regarding graduation requirements, diploma options, course selection, credit recovery, and postsecondary opportunities.
  • Conduct transcript reviews, credit audits, and graduation progress monitoring in collaboration with school counselors and administrators.
  • Coordinate interventions, accommodations, and support services to promote student success and on-time graduation.
  • Assessment, Data Analysis, and Accountability
  • Monitor student achievement, attendance, assessment results, graduation progress, and program effectiveness.
  • Coordinate state and local testing requirements, assessment administration, and reporting procedures.
  • Analyze student and program data to inform decision-making, identify needs, and implement improvement strategies.
  • Compliance and Records Management
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements for alternative education and virtual learning programs, including accurate maintenance of records and documentation for reporting, audits, and accreditation.
