Job Description

Primary Function:
The School Counselor shall be directly responsible to the Principal. The Counselor will provide a comprehensive guidance and counseling program for students at the appropriate school level. Responsibilities include promoting the social, emotional, academic, and career development of each student; consulting with teachers, parents, and staff to enhance their effectiveness; and providing appropriate support to the total school program.

Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university and either possess or be eligible to acquire the appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement(s) required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the School Board.
  • Strong organizational, management, and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated successful instructional experience, general leadership ability, and personal characteristics necessary for working with staff, parents, and the community.
  • Alternative qualifications may be found appropriate and acceptable by the Superintendent and School Board.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and school personnel information while ensuring the safety and welfare of all students and staff.
  • Follow federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies regarding children’s educational welfare.
  • Report any pertinent information to appropriate authorities in cases of child endangerment, neglect, or abuse.
  • Meet with and instruct students in assigned locations at designated times.
  • Collect and interpret data about students to assist in program planning and occupational and/or educational placement, including the development of a Career Development Plan.
  • Provide individual and school-related counseling to students who refer themselves or are referred by parents, teachers, or administrators.
  • Provide small group counseling as needed for all grade levels on developmental or problem‑centered issues.
  • Design coherent instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, current instructional practices, students, the community, and Character Education curriculum goals.
  • Prepare for assigned classes and provide evidence of lesson preparation upon request of the building administrator(s).
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student learning styles.
  • Provide new student orientation and assist with adjustment problems or concerns.
  • Consult regularly with administrators, teachers, and parents regarding student needs.
  • Attend Child Study meetings and offer suggestions for intervention plans as requested.
  • Serve as a referral source to parents and students who need specialized services beyond those provided by the school.
  • Assist with mediation services for student conflicts.
  • Provide information and training to parents concerning parenting skills and resources for handling family crises.
  • Consult with teachers regarding specific student needs and concerns.
  • Work with teachers and receiving counselors to prepare students for transitions between schools and grade levels.
  • Promote effective public relations by communicating with parents and community members about the counseling program.
  • Appraise students’ interests, aptitudes, abilities, educational achievements, and personality development.
  • Assist in referrals alongside the building administrator(s) and the psychologist for specialized services.
  • Assist in group sessions with teachers, parents, community resource personnel, and administrators.
  • Participate in sessions with teachers and other personnel to individualize instruction.
  • Confere with parents in group or individual sessions about the total school program and students’ vocational and personal development.
  • Maintain a positive discipline policy that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff.
  • Ensure adequate supervision of students.
  • Manage classroom procedures to maximize academic learning time.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with students.
  • Motivate students to achieve maximum potential.
  • Create a supportive learning environment encouraging social interaction, active engagement, and self‑motivation.
