Position: ENGLISH TEACHER - 195 DAY
Location: Dumfries

Job Summary

This position plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students. It manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities as required, serving as a general education classroom teacher in single or multi‑grade level classes. The teacher may also support science or technology labs and operates under the general supervision of a principal and/or other designated administrator.

Responsibilities
  • Assess continuously student achievement and maintain assessment and evaluation documentation for reporting purposes.
  • Plan and implement appropriate instructional and learning strategies and activities, including determining the appropriate level of materials and learning experiences.
  • Manage student behavior in the instructional setting, ensuring a conducive learning environment and participating in behavior management across the school.
  • Coordinate instructional activities with other professional staff to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Work independently or in teams, and may visit off‑school sites to monitor students and collaborate with external partners.
  • Participate in in‑service and professional development activities and staff meetings.
  • Establish continuous communication with parents to keep them informed of student progress.
  • Communicate instructional expectations to students to inform them of progress.
  • Assign work to and supervise instructional assistants, parent and student volunteers.
  • Serve as an itinerant teacher at two or more schools on a regular basis.
  • Support or participate in school wide student activities and social events.
  • Monitor student behavior in non‑instructional areas and intervene to control disruptive behavior.
  • Collaborate with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out school wide instructional activities.
Qualifications for Successful Performance
  • Knowledge of the instructional process and of instructional specialties assigned.
  • Understanding of pre‑adolescent and adolescent growth and development.
  • Knowledge of the Prince William County Curriculum and school division mission.
  • Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Skill in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons that meet division and school objectives and student needs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal relationships.
  • For foreign‑language teaching: proficiency in the language.
  • For choral music: ability to demonstrate singing/choral techniques and proficiency on the piano.
  • For instrumental music: proficiency in at least one instrument and the ability to model correct techniques.
  • For visual art: a portfolio demonstrating artistic ability.
  • For career and technical education: journey‑level proficiency in that trade.
Education or Equivalency Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree (minimum).
Certification and License Requirements
  • Collegiate professional, postgraduate professional, or appropriate vocational certificate/license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with endorsement(s) required for teaching.
  • Must be eligible for the Virginia State Certification Program.
  • For itinerant assignments or off‑site tasks: a valid automobile operator’s license to operate a vehicle in Virginia.
Work Environment and

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in indoor settings such as classrooms, laboratories, or offices. The position requires regular interaction with students and faculty, use of computer screens and multimedia equipment, and occasional exposure to crowded working conditions.
