Job Summary:

The Special Education Assistant II supports instructional programming for students with special needs, assisting in supervision, care, and instruction, implementing behavior interventions, collecting data, and maintaining classroom organization under the guidance of the classroom teacher.

Essential Functions
  • Develop and maintain a pleasant and orderly classroom environment, including instructional materials and bulletin boards.
  • Assist students in completing learning tasks assigned by classroom teachers.
  • Lead/facilitate 1:1, small group, or whole class instruction as designated.
  • Carry out instructional plans and, when appropriate, students' Individual Educational Plans (IEP).
  • Maintain student training and behavior data per prescribed procedures.
  • Assist students in following routines, schedules, and directions, adhering to daily IEP adherence.
  • Procure, set up, and operate audio‑visual equipment.
  • Assist in developing individual student schedules, sensory programs, motor group activities, discrete trial drills, and behavior management plans.
  • Create alternative activities for independent work based on teacher‑directed activities.
  • Coordinate school and home supports and work tasks.
  • Assist with data collection and facilitate accommodations as required.
  • Communicate effectively with special education teachers and specialists to support IEP goals.
  • Demonstrate cooperation, openness for growth, and willingness to contribute to a team approach.
  • Assist in maintaining students' records, collections, and related instructional activities.
  • Monitor student attendance, behavior, and suspension data.
  • Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, and duplicating.
  • Introduce and model research‑based interventions to staff and students.
  • Coordinate with specialists and school staff to implement behavior curriculum.
  • Provide transition support for students moving between educational settings.
  • Develop crisis and safety plans in coordination with specialists and staff.
  • Supervise and train students during lunchroom, free time, and non‑instructional periods.
  • Maintain a notebook with weekly behavior logs, BIP progress notes, social skills lesson plans, incident reports, and communication logs.
  • Assist students with daily living skills and deregulated students.
  • Participate in team meetings.
  • Assist with medical‑related duties (catheterization, feeding, assistive devices, colostomy, ileostomy).
  • Assist with services carried over from related fields (OT, PT, speech, adapted PE, vision).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Strong empathetic attitude toward disabled/handicapped students.
  • Willingness to learn specialized instructional/management techniques.
  • Effective communication and relationship‑building skills with students, parents, and staff.
  • Certification in CPR (willing to obtain and maintain).
Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high‑school graduation, including basic keyboarding and filing skills, that provides required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work

Work performed in school settings (classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, recreational areas). Requires frequent walking, standing, lifting up to 80 pounds, and movement of disabled students. Occasional travel to field trips and meetings. Personal care of students (changing catheters, diapers). Training and immunizations against blood‑borne pathogens required.

Evaluation

Performance evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the responsibilities described above.
