SUMMARY

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction provides strategic leadership and vision in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the division’s K-12 instructional program. This role ensures that all educational objectives are aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) and VDOE Quality Standards. The Director oversees curriculum development and implementation at all levels, manages federal grants for Titles I, II, and V, Career and Technical Education (CTE), division-wide testing, and professional development to ensure high standards of student achievement.

ESSENTIAL

FUNCTIONS
  • Curriculum, Instruction, & Federal Programs
    • Curriculum Development: Lead the continuous cycle of development, revision, and implementation of the division’s curriculum maps and pacing guides, ensuring alignment with VA SOLs.
    • Instructional Technology: Support the integration of technology into the classroom; collaborate with the IT department to ensure software and hardware support the division’s pedagogical goals.
    • Comprehensive Planning: Assist in coordination, development, and evaluation of the Division Strategic Plan and individual School Improvement Plans.
    • Instructional Support: Supervise the division’s Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) (formerly RTII) to ensure effective academic and behavioral interventions.
    • Federal Grant Management: Serve as the Division Director for Title I, Part A (Improving Basic Programs), Title II, Part A (Supporting Effective Instruction), and Title V (Rural and Low-Income School Program). Manage applications, budgets, and compliance monitoring.
    • Calendar Oversight: Assist in preparing the annual School Instructional Calendar and the Division-wide Assessment Calendar.
  • Personnel & Professional Development
    • Supervision: Supervise and evaluate assigned district-level staff (e.g., Instructional Coaches, CTE Coordinator, etc.) as per the organizational chart.
    • Teacher Induction: Coordinate the Virginia Lead Teacher/Mentor Program and orientation for all new instructional staff.
    • Observation: Participate in the supervision process of instructional staff through classroom walkthroughs and formal observations to support the Uniform Performance Standards for teachers.
    • Professional Growth: Plan and implement division-wide professional development days focused on research-based instructional strategies.
  • General Administration
    • Budgetary Oversight: Recommend and manage budgets for Curriculum, Instruction, and Federal Grants; ensure all expenditures follow state and federal procurement guidelines.
    • Policy Development: Advise the Superintendent on policy changes necessitated by new state or federal legislation.
    • Community Engagement: Foster open communication with parents and the community regarding instructional programs and student progress.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Certification: Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision K-12.
  • Experience: Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience; previous experience in school-level or central office administration strongly preferred.
  • Technical Knowledge: Demonstrated expertise in Virginia SOLs, VDOE accreditation standards, and the management of Federal Title grants.
  • Skills: Exceptional communication, organizational, and data-analysis skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Physical Demands: Work is typically performed in a central office environment but requires frequent travel to school buildings.
  • Movement: Occasional walking, light lifting (up to 20 lbs), and frequent sitting/standing.
  • Sensory: Ability to read fine print, communicate clearly via telephone and in person, and operate a computer for extended periods.
