  • Assessment & Grading: Design and administer rigorous assessments, essays, and projects that align with college-level expectations. Maintain dual grading systems if required by the school division and the community college.
  • Curriculum Alignment: Ensure all course objectives meet both the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Standards of Learning (SOL) requirements (where applicable) and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) student learning outcomes.
  • Student Support: Provide academic counseling and support to help high school students transition successfully to the pace and depth of higher education coursework.
  • Compliance & Collaboration: Participate in required professional development, departmental meetings, and observations required by both the school division and the partnering community college. Submit syllabus, grades, and attendance artifacts to the college registrar as mandated.
Qualifications & Requirements

CRITICAL NOTE ON CREDENTIALING: To comply with SACSCOC and VCCS accrediting standards, candidates must meet specific higher-education faculty criteria alongside state K-12 licensing.

Minimum Education al & Licensing Requirements:
  • Master's Degree in History, Political Science, Government, or a closely related field OR a Master's Degree in Education/Teaching with at least 18 graduate semester hours in the specific discipline (History for DE History courses; Political Science/Government for DE Government).
  • Valid Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with endorsements in History and Social Sciences (Grades 6–12).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience teaching Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or Dual Enrollment courses.
  • Experience teaching as an adjunct or full-time instructor at a community college or four-year university.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to teach historiography, critical analysis of primary/secondary sources, and advanced analytical writing.
  • Excellent classroom management and communication skills, with the ability to engage a diverse student population.
  • Strong organizational skills to handle the administrative duties of both a high school faculty member and a college adjunct instructor.
Benefits & Compensation
  • Competitive salary commensurate with the school division's teacher salary scale (plus potential dual enrollment stipends, depending on district policy).
  • Comprehensive benefits package (health, dental, vision, Virginia Retirement System [VRS] participation).
  • Tuition reimbursement opportunities for continuous professional development.
