Permanent Substitute - Instructional Assistant
Botetourt County School District, Read Mountain Middle School – Cloverdale, Virginia
Starting Date: Immediately
Salary: $125/day (maximum 4 days per week)
Job DescriptionInstructional Assistant work is to provide assistance to administrators or teachers in the daily management of the school and/or instruction of students. Duties include skilled clerical work, typing, filing, maintaining records, and completing office assignments. The employee supports classroom tasks, observes student behavior and learning, and helps maintain classroom order. May be assigned to pre‑kindergarten, kindergarten, or special education classrooms. Responsibilities also include monitoring basic personal needs, physical health, and providing occasional restraint when needed.
All tasks follow detailed, specific procedures.
- Assist in providing individual and small group instruction, as taught by the classroom teacher.
- Assist with instructional activities; reading to groups of students, provide library assistance, etc.
- Help students with special assignments or academic problems.
- Assist with daily routine tasks, such as cafeteria duty, bus duty, money collection, hall duty, etc.
- Help maintain order in the classroom, monitor students to keep them on task.
- Prepare instructional materials as requested.
- Encourage safety, work, and study habits.
- Assist in fire drills and other building security procedures as requested.
- Escort students on field trips and at school, assist in physical and playground activities, accompany children to restrooms and assist with toilet needs.
- Maintain bulletin boards, student records for daily attendance, lunch tickets, health charts, and classroom supplies.
- May work with students who require individual and close attention.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior.
- Alert the teacher to the special needs of individual students.
- Assist in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct.
- Perform related work as required.
General knowledge of classroom teaching practices, library and school office procedures. Ability to maintain confidential information, use standard office, library, and computer equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and to establish effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students, and associates.
Education and ExperienceHigh school graduate or GED. Some experience working with children. Equivalent training and experience may substitute for these minimum qualifications.
Physical RequirementsSignificant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing and pulling. Ability to lift 10 pounds.
