Northumberland High School is seeking a dynamic, student-centered, and highly qualified educator to teach advanced, college-level social studies courses to high school students. The successful candidate will hold a dual appointment or meet credentialing standards with our partner community college to teach Dual Enrollment (DE) Virginia & United States History, DE World History II, and/or DE American Government.
This role bridges the gap between secondary and post‑secondary education, requiring a teacher who can maintain high academic standards, foster critical thinking, and prepare students for the rigor of college-level coursework.
Key Responsibilities- Teach college-level curricula for DE VA/US History, DE World History II, and/or DE Government, adhering strictly to the master course syllabi provided by the partnering Virginia Community College.
- Design and administer rigorous assessments, essays, and projects that align with college-level expectations; maintain dual grading systems if required by the school division and the community college.
- Ensure all course objectives meet both the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Standards of Learning (SOL) requirements (where applicable) and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) student learning outcomes.
- Provide academic counseling and support to help high school students transition successfully to the pace and depth of higher education coursework.
- Participate in required professional development, departmental meetings, and observations required by both the school division and the partnering community college; submit syllabus, grades, and attendance artifacts to the college registrar as mandated.
CRITICAL NOTE ON CREDENTIALING: To comply with SACSCOC and VCCS accrediting standards, candidates must meet specific higher‑education faculty criteria alongside state K‑12 licensing.
Minimum Education al & Licensing Requirements- Master’s Degree in History, Political Science, Government, or a closely related field OR a Master’s Degree in Education/Teaching with at least 18 graduate semester hours in the specific discipline (History for DE History courses; Political Science/Government for DE Government).
- Valid Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with endorsements in History and Social Sciences (Grades 6–12).
- Prior experience teaching Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or Dual Enrollment courses.
- Experience teaching as an adjunct or full‑time instructor at a community college or four‑year university.
- Deep content knowledge in American history, global history, and/or the structures of U.S. government and politics.
- Demonstrated ability to teach historiography, critical analysis of primary/secondary sources, and advanced analytical writing.
- Excellent classroom management and communication skills, with the ability to engage a diverse student population.
- Strong organizational skills to handle the administrative duties of both a high‑school faculty member and a college adjunct instructor.
