Teacher Assistant (Paraprofessional)

The Teacher Assistant (Paraprofessional) supports the academic, behavioral, and emotional development of students residing in a residential treatment facility. Working closely with teachers, clinicians, and residential staff, this role helps create a structured, safe, and supportive learning environment for students with emotional, behavioral, and/or developmental challenges.

Key Responsibilities
  • Instructional Support
  • Assist the lead teacher in implementing lesson plans and instructional activities.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group academic support.
  • Reinforce learning concepts and support students in completing assignments.
  • Adapt instructional materials and strategies to align with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Behavioral & Emotional Support
  • Support students in developing appropriate social, emotional, and behavioral skills.
  • Implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) under supervision.
  • Assist in documenting progress toward behavioral and measurable IEP and 504 goals under supervision.
  • Utilize trauma-informed and therapeutic strategies to de-escalate conflicts.
  • Model positive behavior, communication, and coping strategies.
  • Classroom Management
  • Maintain a structured, organized, and safe classroom environment.
  • Promote student engagement using positive behavior supports collaborative problem-solving strategies.
  • Monitor student behavior and ensure compliance with school and facility expectations.
  • Assist with transitions between activities, classes, and residential schedules.
  • Collaboration & Communication
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, case managers, and residential staff.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with colleagues, even in situations of disagreement.
  • Document student academic progress, behavioral incidents, and daily activities under supervision.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
  • Supervision & Safety
  • Supervise students during classroom activities, meals, and transitions.
  • Follow all safety protocols and crisis intervention procedures.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies in accordance with facility guidelines
Position Qualifications

• 2 years of work experience with children or completed 2 years of coursework in a related field preferred.

• Proficient with Windows, Outlook, internet, MS Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

• Mental stamina to work positively with students for the length of scheduled workday.

• Patient, flexible, positive, consistent, dependable, and cooperative with a sense of humor.

• Sufficient critical thinking and judgment to handle crisis situations.

• Ability to take supervision and correction constructively.

Education:

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
• Associate or bachelor's degree in education or related field preferred. Kenbridge, VA Onsite Full Time
