Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth. The special education teacher will provide quality educational programming and services through sound instruction to meet the needs of students;
will develop and ensure the provisions of the Individual Education Program (IEP) are being implemented for special education students; and will comply with the standards defined under the Commonwealth's statutes and program certification requirements. The Special Education Teacher reports directly to the Building Principal and/or Assistant Principal. As a condition of employment, the selected individual(s) must successfully complete the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice's Basic Skills and Handle with Care training located in Hanover, County and have the ability to obtain certifications in First-Aid and CPR.
Minimum Qualifications
Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching Certificate/License with one or more endorsements in Special Education. Bachelor's Degree. Knowledge of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia and experienced in developing Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities. Skilled in the implementation of evidenced-based strategies and interventions and the delivery of specially designed instruction.
Familiar with academic content, curriculum, methods, materials, equipment in order to successfully perform the work. Ability to supervise students and youth, facilitate appropriate classroom management, and maintain accurate records. Regular and predictable attendance is expected. Ability to obtain certifications in First Aid and CPR.
Additional Considerations
Knowledge of DJJ and DHRM policies and procedures and the ability to meet DHRM established physical demands. Experience teaching at-risk youth preferred. Currently endorsed or willing to obtain an additional endorsement from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) in a content area required for graduation.
