Job Duties

To provide quality instructions and to meet the individual needs of the students in the areas of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Educational Diploma (GED). Additionally, to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth's statutes and program certification requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to facilitate other instructors. The demonstrated ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching of all the five subjects and supervise students and aides in a classroom setting; the demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records. Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education. Must possess working knowledge of all facets of the basic adult education field, adult literacy and computer software appropriate for program needs.

Demonstrated competency in the relevant field of current licensure. Demonstrated ability to work with students in a classroom/lab environment. Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university in or in a relevant educational field, preferably a major or minor in high school math, science or other relevant subject. Experience teaching adults and or youth and knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education is required.

Experience to work with students in a classroom/lab environment. Licensure:
Must possess a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional Teaching License from the Virginia Department of Education (VADOE) or qualify for reciprocity from another state and without deficiencies. (For Licensing Information Visit: http://) Please note you are responsible for any renewal points to maintain a teaching license under the guidelines of Virginia Department of Education to comply with the requirements for your continued employment in this position.

If you are seeking reciprocity from another state, you must submit all documentation for a Virginia Teaching License within 90 days of employment and satisfy all requirements within a year.

Additional Considerations

Master's degree with a major or minor in a relevant educational field. Knowledge and experience of policy and procedures governing adult correctional education. Prefer experience teaching adults and or youth in a correctional or alternative education setting. Experience and knowledge of Virginia Department of Corrections' institutional policies and procedures. Advanced knowledge and experience in correctional education classroom management. Knowledge, experience and ability to supervise students and inmate aides in a correctional facility.

Advanced knowledge and success rate in General Educational Development (GED) Preparation and completion. Experience teaching adults and or youth in a correctional or alternative education setting.
