Job Description

Job Title: School Counselor

Supervisor: Director of Student Support Services

Pay Grade: Teacher

Terms of Employment: 200 days

Job Summary: To Initiate and maintain an educational program which will offer the best results for a successful high school experience and to help students realize their own individual worth.

Essential Duties
  • Assists students in understanding their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individuals standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and works with students involving educational and occupational plans.
  • Remain readily available to students to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
  • Takes an active role in interpreting the school’s objectives to students, parents, and the community-at-large.
  • Works with teachers, students and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by Student Services.
  • Supervises the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications.
  • Initiates, assembles, maintains, and interprets accurate health records, attendance records, cumulative progress records, activity and employment records, and keeps uniform transcript records for assigned students.
  • Maintains accountability, follows a student’s sequential progress; surveys activities and compiles information of graduates and dropouts, informs the staff and community of these findings; conducts research projects which will serve as a basis for the improvement of the total educational program.
  • Performs such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications

A postgraduate professional license with an endorsement as a guidance counselor is required. Five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience is required, two (2) of which shall have been at the high school level is preferred. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board or Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
