Job Description
Special Education Teacher – Adapted Curriculum for the 2026-27 school year at Western Albemarle High School, Crozet, Virginia.
Primary responsibilities include teaching students with intellectual, physical, and other disabilities; implementing individualized education plans (IEPs); providing culturally responsive instruction; and managing special education services.
Essential Functions- Teach content to meet Virginia’s Standards of Learning using research‑based curriculum.
- Assist students with multiple and specific academic and functional disabilities.
- Implement Individualized Education Plans for students with disabilities.
- Use various teaching methods, including intensive individualized instruction, problem‑solving assignments, and small‑group work.
- Ensure appropriate accommodations and related services are available.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials; provide individualized and small‑group instruction.
- Provide culturally responsive instruction to linguistically diverse students.
- Establish a caring, structured environment and manage student behavior.
- Function as a case manager for students eligible for special education and related services.
- Schedule and facilitate IEP meetings and coordinate with parents, teachers, and related personnel.
- Administer and score standardized assessments.
- Maintain detailed student records in compliance with the Code of Virginia and Virginia regulations.
- Assist in the identification and placement process under IDEA.
- Supervise paraprofessionals, guiding data collection and program fidelity.
- Participate in professional development and district meetings.
- Current Virginia Special Education teaching certificate with endorsement in Adapted Curriculum K‑12 (preferred) or General Curriculum K‑12.
- Experience teaching students with intellectual or physical impairments preferred.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, teachers, and community resources.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practice.
Bachelor’s degree in education or related field is preferred.
Physical Conditions and Nature of WorkWork in school settings—classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and community areas—requiring frequent physical activity and close contact with students. May involve lifting up to 50 pounds and speaking/hearing tasks.
