Instructor of Nursing
Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking a candidate to fill a faculty role for the Registered Nursing Program. The assigned location for this position will be at the Southern Gap campus in Grundy VA. The position reports directly to the Dean of Health Technologies and indirectly to the Vice President of Academic and Student Services at Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC).
This is a full-time, nine-month teaching position. Reappointment will be based on performance evaluations and institutional needs. The primary responsibility of a member of the teaching faculty in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for the students. At Southwest, the major emphasis shall be on excellent teaching by working with students in classrooms and/or laboratories, through individual conferences, various distance education media, and related activities.
Our goal is to help students develop their own interests and abilities to the fullest capacity in order to become better employees and better citizens. Applicants should possess expertise in their field and a desire to work in a collaborative, learning-centered environment focused on equity, student learning, and success. Other duties shared by teaching faculty include participation in reaccreditation efforts, student advising, student activities, sponsorship of student organizations, supervision of work-study students, college service activities, professional development activities, and community service.
The Nursing Program is approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing and accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
Job
Responsibilities Include:
- Teaching Fundamentals, Medical/Surgical Nursing, Obstetrics, Psychiatric, Geriatric, Maternal and Pediatric Nursing in the classroom and clinical environments;
- Advising students on curriculum and career goals;
- Working with other nursing faculty members to develop and evaluate curriculum/courses as required;
- Establishing and assessing student learning outcomes and participate in institutional effectiveness initiatives to include assessment and program reviews;
- Integrating concept-based nursing education principles;
- Teaching courses via distance learning media;
- Maintaining ten office hours per week;
- Serving on college/program committees;
- Participating in college, community and professional activities;
- Pursuing professional growth and development activities in his/her discipline(s);
- Performing other such duties as may be deemed appropriate;
- Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with students, faculty and staff and other stakeholders important to the college.
Special Assignments
- May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's/Required Qualifications
- Current unrestricted or multistate license to practice as a registered nurse in Virginia is required;
Master's degree in Nursing required;
Proficient with computer technology including use of a PC and relevant software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Student Information Systems (SIS) and Learning Management Systems (Canvas), etc.;
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty and staff, and other stakeholders important to the College is required;
An acceptable background check for successful candidate is also required;
Two years recent, related nursing experience required;
Candidates must be proficient in oral and written communication in the English language.
