Adjunct Sociology Faculty (Part-Time) - Introduction to Sociology

Engage students in analyzing the social patterns and institutions that shape everyday life. Join Southside Virginia Community College in examining social behavior, institutions, and cultural dynamics through SOC
200:
Introduction to Sociology. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course that introduces the fundamental concepts and principles of sociology. The successful candidate must be committed to SVCC's mission to provide high-quality education to the Southside Virginia community.

Course Content & Specific Duties:

  • Introduce fundamental sociological concepts, principles, and theories.
  • Instruct students on sociological research methods and the impact of social inequality.
  • Examine diverse topics including culture, race, social class, and gender.
  • Analyze major social institutions and their roles in contemporary society.
  • Discuss the processes and impacts of social change.
  • Design and implement assignments that promote college-level reading comprehension, critical thinking, and clear, coherent written communication.
  • Utilize pre-developed assessments aligned with institutional learning outcomes and requirements and evaluate student work to support program and college-wide assessment purposes.
  • Deliver instruction in a hybrid format, ensuring all course materials, activities, and assessments meet established college standards for quality and rigor.
  • Maintain consistent student engagement through the college's Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), supporting both in-person and online components of the course.
  • Monitor and document class attendance in compliance with college policies, maintaining accurate records and communicating with students and necessary departments as needed to support academic success.

Special Assignments
- May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
- Master's degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Sociology from a regionally accredited institution. Excellent oral and written communication skills Interpersonal communication skills; ability to write syllabi and exams Ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum, and assessments Ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the community college and student success

Additional Considerations
- Teaching experience at the college level, specifically with face-to-face and online/hybrid modalities. Competency using instructional technologies such as SMARTboards, Zoom and Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). Experience working with community college students. Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and academic success.
