All paraprofessionals must have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent. Additionally, paraprofessionals must be qualified through one of the following options:
- Complete two years of study at an institution of higher education; or
- Obtain an associate's (or higher) degree (must provide supporting documents)
Newly hired paraprofessionals who do not meet one of these requirements will be required to certify through the Parapro assessment as soon as possible after being hired:
- Meet a proficiency target of 455 on the Parapro standardized assessment.
- In addition to the options identified above, paraprofessionals may achieve local status by meeting a local proficiency score of 450 on the Parapro.
When completing new hire paperwork paraprofessionals will receive direction on how to begin the process of scheduling the Parapro assessment.
Shenandoah County Public Schools pays 43¢ per hour ($548/year) to paraprofessionals who provide personal bodily care for certain disabled students. This may include diapering, stomach tube feeding, and other direct care responsibilities.
