Supervisor of Special Education
Provides leadership, coaching, consultation, and compliance oversight in the areas of special education services and Section 504 implementation. Supports building-level staff, students, and administrators ensuring alignment with local, state, and federal regulations. Responsibilities include professional development, monitoring instructional practices, supporting transition planning, and facilitating interagency collaboration to improve outcomes for students with disabilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Coordinate, supervise, and evaluate Special Education Services, Psychological Services, and School Social Work Services.
- Provide direct support and professional development to building‑level staff and teachers related to child study, special‑education evaluations, and eligibility determinations in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Support staff and students involved with special education and Section 504 services by attending eligibility meetings, participating in staff meetings, and delivering monthly department‑level updates.
- Coach and consult building administrators on special‑education program requirements and instructional best practices.
- Coach and consult building administrators on regulatory compliance and building capacity.
- Coach and consult building administrators on programmatic and staffing changes in response to changing student demographics.
- Coach and consult building administrators on observations of special‑education teachers in areas targeted for improvement.
- Provide consultation on Child Find responsibilities, pre‑referral interventions, and IDEA eligibility determinations.
- Assist in the Manifestation Determination Review (MDR) process.
- Assist in the supervision and evaluation of related services personnel.
- Support the development and revision of the Special Education Administrator Handbook and Division Handbook.
- Serve as the designated special education representative on Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) meetings.
- Assist in the preparation and submission of required local, state, and federal special education reports.
- Conduct informal school visits to monitor student progress and provide instructional coaching to teachers.
- Review Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students to ensure quality and compliance.
- Review Plans of Care for all special education services.
- Assist with the completion and reporting of the December 1 Child Count to the Virginia Department of Education.
- Attend monthly Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) meetings.
- Train secondary special education teachers and counselors on effective transition planning and proper documentation.
- Collaborate with outside organizations to ensure service continuity for students and families.
- Assist in the recruitment and selection of instructional and related services personnel within special education.
- Other assignments as deemed necessary by the Director of Student Services.
Master’s degree (M.A.) or equivalent; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsHold the Postgraduate Professional Certificate with an endorsement in school administration.
Hold a valid Virginia driver’s license.
Employment- 260 days per year.
- Administrative Grade 2 salary scale.
