Adjunct Instructor for Certified Fiber Optics Technician
Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) is seeking a qualified Adjunct Instructor to teach Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT) certification training. This position supports the College’s workforce and career training mission by preparing students for entry‑level and advanced careers in fiber optics and telecommunications.
Position SummaryThe Adjunct Instructor will deliver hands‑on and classroom‑based instruction aligned with the Certified Fiber Optics Technician (CFOT) curriculum. Instruction may include short‑term workforce training, evening or weekend classes, and customized training for industry partners.
Teaching OpportunitiesCertified Fiber Optics Instructors are needed to teach Fiber Optics Splicing, Pole Climbing and Safety, or both subject areas. Candidates with expertise in only one area are encouraged to apply. Please indicate your area(s) of interest and qualifications in your letter of application.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Deliver CFOT certification training in accordance with approved curriculum and industry standards
- Provide hands‑on instruction in fiber optics theory, safety, installation, termination, testing, and troubleshooting
- Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments
- Evaluate student performance and maintain accurate records
- Ensure a safe learning environment, particularly during lab‑based activities
- Maintain current knowledge of fiber optics technologies and workforce trends
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, and college administrators
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
KSA's /Required Qualifications
- 5 years of non‑teaching work experience in fiber optics, telecommunications, or a related field
- Ability to teach technical concepts to adult learners with diverse backgrounds
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Commitment to student success and workforce development
- Experience providing technical education in classroom/small group setting.
- Experience delivering workforce or industry‑based training
Some travel may be required.
