Three Rivers Treatment Center is seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and innovative Special Education Teacher to join our multidisciplinary team. Our private residential school serves adolescents receiving behavioral health treatment, providing a safe, structured, and therapeutic learning environment where students can grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
Position Summary:
The Special Education Teacher plans and delivers engaging, individualized instruction aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) while supporting students with emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities. Working alongside clinicians, residential staff, and educational professionals, the teacher develops meaningful educational experiences that help students achieve academic success while supporting their therapeutic goals.
What You'll Do:
- Develop and deliver individualized lesson plans aligned with Virginia SOLs.
- Create a structured, positive, and engaging classroom environment.
- Implement evidence-based instructional and behavioral strategies.
- Differentiate instruction to meet students' academic, behavioral, and emotional needs.
- Participate in the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Individualized Instruction Plans (IIPs).
- Collaborate with the Director of Educational Services, clinicians, social workers, testing specialists, and residential staff.
- Monitor student progress through ongoing formative and summative assessments.
- Maintain accurate educational records and documentation in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Communicate regularly with families and other stakeholders regarding student progress.
- Supervise instructional paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom.
- Participate as an active member of the multidisciplinary treatment team.
- Maintain HIPAA and FERPA confidentiality standards.
- Complete required regulatory and professional development training.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or an approved teacher preparation program.
- Hold or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with the appropriate endorsement.
- Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
- Strong classroom management and communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Valid Virginia Driver's License.
- Must be at least 19 years of age in accordance with Commonwealth of Virginia regulations.
Preferred:
- Master's Degree in Education or Special Education.
- Two years of classroom teaching experience.
- Experience working with students with emotional, behavioral, or developmental disabilities.
- Experience in a behavioral health, therapeutic day school, or residential treatment setting.
- Virginia Collegiate or Postgraduate Professional Teaching License.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequently lift up to 10 pounds.
- Occasionally lift or move 25–50 pounds.
- Ability to safely assist with student behavioral interventions and crisis situations when necessary, including approved behavioral management techniques.
Required Training:
- CPR and First Aid Certification
- Behavioral Management Program
- Autism Spectrum Disorder Instructional Supports
- CIEES Ultimate Behavior Toolkit Training
- Other required DBHDS, Virginia Department of Education, and facility-specific training within required time frames.
