Director of Secondary Education

The Director of Secondary Education provides visionary leadership to ensure high-quality, evidence-based instruction across grades 6–12. This position directs, plans, coordinates, and monitors secondary, career and technical, alternative, and adult education programs, including curriculum, assessment, professional learning, grant administration, compliance, and reporting. The director collaborates with school leaders and instructional staff to promote instructional excellence, continuous improvement, innovation, and equitable outcomes for all students.

Work is performed under the general direction of the Chief Academic Officer. Departmental supervision is exercised over Adult Education teachers, Grant Coordinators, and support personnel.

Essential Functions

  • Plan and carry out a division-wide program of curriculum review and development for grades 6-12.
  • Lead in the evaluation of secondary instruction methods and programs, and recommend changes and improvements as needed, using data to determine ways to improve performance.
  • Ensure compliance with state/federal regulations and other accreditation agencies governing educational programs and services within the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Develop an effective division-wide program of supervision and in-service education of the instructional staff in the secondary schools, including a high-quality program of professional development for secondary instructional staff and administrators.
  • Assist principals in developing and managing an effective program of instructional supervision; observe secondary instruction and provide feedback to principals, as requested.
  • Maintain curriculum and resources that align with VDOE Standards of Learning.
  • Coordinate writing all 6-12 curriculum for English, Mathematics, Science, History & Social Science, World Languages, and other core content areas.
  • Work collectively with instructional staff to plan and adjust curriculum as needed.
  • Coordinate creation of 6-12 common assessments that are aligned to the VDOE curriculum framework.
  • Maintain a process for collecting and analyzing all 6-12 data at the school and division level.
  • Provide system-wide protocols for building principals to implement and monitor division expectations for instruction.
  • Attend all appropriate professional development offered by VDOE and other state/federal agencies.
  • Analyze educational progress of secondary students; modify programs or instruction as needed; facilitate data dialogues with secondary principals and instructional staff.
  • Lead the evaluation, selection, adoption, purchase, and inventory of textbooks and instructional materials in accordance with division policy.
  • Ensure vertical alignment of curriculum and instructional programs across grades PreK–12 through collaboration with the Director of Elementary Education.
  • Coordinate extended learning times in all secondary schools (i.e., before and after school learning, summer school).
  • Provides oversight to the development and administration of the Carl Perkins budget.
  • Provide leadership in the development, continuous appraisal, and evaluation of a well-balanced, effective career and technical education program attuned to students' needs, career interests, employment opportunities, and high-demand career fields, in order to achieve established program goals.
  • Assist school administrators with the development of local school plans, establishing budgets, and keeping records of expenditures for career and technical education.
  • Disseminate information to the educational, business, and lay communities to keep them abreast of the purposes, needs, and scope of the educational programs.
  • Assume responsibilities for coordinating and administering grants related to secondary and career and technical education.
  • Assume responsibilities for developing, coordinating, and administering alternative programs;
    Algebra Readiness Grant, Transition, GED, Individualized Student Alternative Education Plan (ISAEP), Alternative Education, Adult Basic Education, Credit Recovery, and other relevant programs.
