Job SummaryThe position is responsible for assisting the classroom teacher by performing tasks assigned and directed by the teacher. The teacher's instructions must not infringe upon the responsibilities reserved for the certified teacher. It is vital that both the teacher and the Teaching Assistant fully understand the limitations and purpose of the assistant.
Essential Duties- Assists with organizing and preparing the classroom and instructional materials; gathers resources and related supplies.
- Instructs small groups of students in various subject areas under the teacher's supervision, and works with individual students who require additional help with assignments.
- Provides guidance and encourages the development of literacy and social skills.
- Monitors students and provides classroom coverage when the teacher is away.
- Performs administrative duties such as making copies, recording attendance, grading papers, and other related tasks.
- Provides supervision during recreation, special events, field trips, and other activities as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- previous experience working with students preferred.
- Para Pro Certification.
- Demonstrates basic reading, writing, and computation skills.
- Has good physical and emotional health.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and enter data into a computer; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so others may understand clearly in regular classrooms, outdoors, and on the phone;
physical agility to lift to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.
