Special Education Teacher

Job Description

The position is responsible for special-needs students and for creating a classroom environment that develops competencies in academic, social, and motor skills.

• Implement the assigned program of study.
• Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
• Monitor student progress toward achieving instructional objectives and goals outlined in the IEPs.
• Maintain and upgrade professional skills.
• Teach rules of conduct.
• Maintain order in the classroom and, when applicable, on the playground.
• Counsel pupils when adjustment and academic problems arise.
• Discuss pupils' academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents; keep attendance and grade records as required by the school.
• Coordinate class field trips when applicable; work cooperatively with the total staff.
• Assume responsibility for the care of materials, equipment, and facilities.
• Assume responsibility for maintaining a neat, safe environment and promote positive interaction among students.
• Encourage self‑direction and self‑motivation and demonstrate knowledge of the subject(s) taught.
• Utilize a variety of appropriate materials and resources.
• Perform other job‑related duties as assigned by the Principal and the Special Education Director.

• Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field.
• Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement to teach special education.
• Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, enter data into a computer; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones; lift up to 25 pounds; bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.

Duties are normally performed in a school or classroom environment and may occasionally be performed in the field. Noise level is usually moderate.

Criminal Justice Background check, Fingerprinting, TB Assessment.

Dependent on grade level and subject; may include instructional assistants, volunteers, tutors.
