Job Description
The position is responsible for special-needs students and for creating a classroom environment that develops competencies in academic, social, and motor skills.
Essential Duties- Implement the assigned program of study.
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Monitor student progress toward achieving instructional objectives and goals outlined in the IEPs.
- Maintain and upgrade professional skills.
- Teach rules of conduct.
- Maintain order in the classroom and, when applicable, on the playground.
- Counsel pupils when adjustment and academic problems arise.
- Discuss pupils' academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents; keep attendance and grade records as required by the school.
- Coordinate class field trips when applicable; work cooperatively with the total staff.
- Assume responsibility for the care of materials, equipment, and facilities.
- Assume responsibility for maintaining a neat, safe environment and promote positive interaction among students.
- Encourage self‑direction and self‑motivation and demonstrate knowledge of the subject(s) taught.
- Utilize a variety of appropriate materials and resources.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned by the Principal and the Special Education Director.
- Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related field.
- Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement to teach special education.
- Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, enter data into a computer; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones; lift up to 25 pounds; bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.
Duties are normally performed in a school or classroom environment and may occasionally be performed in the field. Noise level is usually moderate.
