Job Description

Job Title: Special Education Teacher

General Description: Assists students in the fulfilling of their potential for intellectual, emotional, and psychological growth.

Requirements:

  • Possesses at minimum a bachelor’s degree.
  • Holds or is eligible for a Virginia teaching license with the appropriate teaching endorsement.

Reports To: Principal;
Assistant Principal

Essential Job Functions:

  • Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Develop individualized educational programs and lesson plans.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establish clear objectives for all units, lessons and projects that are measurable, attainable, realistic, and specific.
  • Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  • Diagnose the learning styles of students regularly and refer to specialists as needed.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by the school division.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies/rules governing student life and conduct and develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, maintaining discipline in a fair and just manner.
  • Confer with colleagues, students, and parents regularly.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and pursue professional growth through reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, etc.
  • Assist in the selection of texts, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for assistants and/or volunteers.
  • Accept a share of responsibility for co-curricular activities as assigned.
  • Maintain positive public relations at all times.
  • Complete other tasks as assigned.
