Job Description

Special Education Assistant II - Autism Base

This position supports students with special needs in the 2026-27 school year at Western Albemarle High School. The role includes classroom support, implementation of IEPs, behavior intervention, data collection, and coordination with specialists.

General Definition of Work

The Special Education Assistant II provides support to the instructional program, assists with supervision, care, instruction, implementation of plans, monitoring behavior, documenting activities, and supporting students’ IEP goals. The aide works under the direction of the classroom teacher but may independently carry out specific tasks.

Essential Functions
  • Develop and maintain a pleasant and orderly classroom environment.
  • Assist students with completion of learning tasks.
  • Lead and/or facilitate instruction for individuals, 1:1, small groups, or whole class.
  • Carry out instructional plans and students’ IEP.
  • Maintain training data per procedures.
  • Assist students in following routines, directions, and schedules.
  • Operate audio‑visual equipment.
  • Support development and implementation of student schedules, sensory programs, motor group activities, and behavior management plans.
  • Provide alternative activities for independent work.
  • Coordinate school and home supports.
  • Collect data and facilitate accommodations.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers to help achieve IEP goals.
  • Demonstrate cooperation and willingness to contribute to a team approach.
  • Assist with student records, lunch money, and related instructional activities.
  • Monitor attendance, behavior, and suspension data.
  • Perform clerical duties such as typing, filing, duplicating.
  • Model and teach evidence‑based interventions and curriculum.
  • Coordinate with specialists to implement behavior curriculum.
  • Provide transition support for students moving between settings.
  • Produce crisis and safety plans.
  • Help students remain in school and maintain stability.
  • Supervise and train students during lunch, free time, and other non‑instructional periods.
  • Maintain a notebook with behavior logs, BIPs, lesson plans, incident reports, and communication logs.
  • Assist students with daily living skills.
  • Assist with deregulated students.
  • Participate in team meetings.
  • Assist with medical‑related duties (catheterization, feeding, breathing devices, colostomy, ileostomy).
    Assist with related services (OT, PT, Speech, AP, Vision).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

High school graduate or equivalent; CPR certification willing to obtain. Ability to develop an empathetic attitude toward students with disabilities, learn specialized instructional/management techniques, communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equal to high school graduation with basic keyboard and filing training, providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work

Typical duties include frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 80 pounds, moving students in wheelchairs, personal hygiene care, and occasional travel on field trips. The role requires flexibility, patience, self‑motivation, ability to work under stressful conditions, and knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the responsibilities described above.
