Position

Purpose:

Under the general supervision of the School Principal and Special Education Teacher, the Special Education Paraprofessional supports students with disabilities in maximizing their academic achievement, interpersonal development, and activities of daily living. The paraprofessional assists in implementing individualized instruction, reinforcing IEP goals, and maintaining a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide instructional support to students individually and in small groups under the direction of a certified Special Education Teacher.
  • Assist in implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and behavior intervention plans.
  • Reinforce instructional material through repetition, guided practice, and individualized assistance.
  • Support students in developing independence with self-care and daily living skills as appropriate.
  • Monitor and document student progress as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist with classroom preparation, organization of instructional materials, and learning activities.
  • Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, field trips, and other assigned duties.
  • Reinforce appropriate behavior using consistent, positive behavior management strategies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with district, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, administrators, and parents as directed.

Additional Duties:
Perform related tasks as assigned by the Principal, Special Education Teacher, or central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment:
Uses standard office and classroom equipment including computers, printers, copy machines, instructional technology, and assistive devices as needed.

Travel Requirements:
May travel between school buildings or attend training sessions as required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of special education principles and instructional support practices.
  • Understanding of differentiated instruction and student learning needs.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions from certified staff.
  • Ability to support behavior management plans effectively and consistently.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.

Physical and Work Environment:
Works in a standard school and classroom setting. May require lifting, assisting students with mobility, standing for extended periods, and supporting students with physical or behavioral needs.

Qualifications Profile:

  • Education:

    High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associate's Degree or completion of at least 60 college credit hours preferred (or ability to meet state paraprofessional requirements).
  • Experience:

    Prior experience working with children, particularly students with disabilities, preferred.
  • Certification/License:
    Must possess an Associate's Degree or higher from an accredited institution OR Must pass the ETS Para Pro Assessment and meet Virginia Department of Education paraprofessional qualification requirements. CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
