Job Description

The Department of Juvenile Justice is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth and strengthen families and communities across the Commonwealth. DJJ's Division of Education is seeking a qualified Health & Physical Education/Driver Education Teacher to provide high-quality, standards-based instruction that supports the individual learning needs of students and aligns with the Commonwealth's educational standards, statutes, and program certification requirements.

The teacher will design and deliver engaging, research-based instruction, foster a safe, respectful, and student-centered learning environment, and use student data to inform instruction, monitor progress, and promote academic success.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Candidates must meet one of the following requirements: (1) Earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in Health and Physical Education; or (2) Earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and completed a major in Health and Physical Education or 45 semester hours of coursework distributed across the following areas:
    Personal Health, Safety, and Care of Athletic Injuries;
    Human Anatomy, Physiology, Exercise Physiology, and Biomechanics of Human Movement;
    General Health and Physical Education Theory, including Curriculum Design and Development;
    Instructional Methods and Skills for Secondary Physical Education;
    Concepts of Motor Learning and Instructional Methods and Skills for Elementary Physical Education;
    Instructional Methods for Elementary and Secondary School Health;
    Health and Physical Education Electives;
    Instructional Methods and Strategies for Adapted Physical Education;
    Technology in Health and Physical Education;
    Principles of Human Nutrition; and Assessment and Evaluation in the Content Area.
  • Licensure:
    Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with endorsements in Health & Physical Education/Driver Education.
Additional Considerations
  • Experience as a Health & Physical Education/Driver Education Teacher in a secondary setting preferred
  • Experience teaching at-risk youth preferred
