Job Description

Central Virginia Community College is located in Lynchburg, Virginia, in view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. CVCC is a comprehensive two-year institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 5,000 students in occupational/technical programs and university-parallel/college transfer programs. The Community College Counselor at the Amherst Center plays a pivotal role in supporting the academic success and personal development of students, with a particular focus on those enrolled in dual enrollment programs.

This position involves close collaboration with faculty, staff, high school counselors, career coaches, and the college’s dual enrollment coordinator to provide comprehensive support services. The counselor is instrumental in facilitating student orientations, delivering the Student Success course, and assisting with recruitment and retention initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Academic Advising and Support
  • Provide individualized academic advising to students, assisting with course selection and educational planning.
  • Monitor student progress and intervene as necessary to promote academic success.
  • Connect students with appropriate academic support services, including tutoring and study skills workshops.
  • Student Success Instruction
  • Teach the Student Success course to incoming Early College students, focusing on developing effective study habits, time management, and other essential college readiness skills.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide feedback to foster continuous improvement.
  • Orientation and Workshops
  • Organize and conduct orientation programs for new students and their parents, facilitating a smooth transition into the college environment.
  • Develop and deliver workshops on topics such as career exploration, transfer planning, and academic strategies.
  • Collaboration and Communication
  • Maintain regular communication with high school counselors, career coaches, and the dual enrollment coordinator to ensure cohesive support for dual-enrolled students.
  • Work closely with the Amherst Center Director to address student needs and contribute to center initiatives.
  • Recruitment and Retention
  • Participate in recruitment activities to promote the Early College program.
  • Implement retention strategies to support student persistence and completion.
  • Transfer and Career Guidance
  • Assist students in exploring transfer opportunities to four-year institutions.
  • Provide career counseling to help students align their academic pursuits with career goals.
