The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) seeks an experienced Engineering Technician II to fill a vacancy in our Solid Waste Management Program. The successful candidate will provide hands‑on, technical support to monitor, operate and maintain environmental infrastructure at the I‑95 and I‑66 landfills. Emphasis will be on leachate pumping infrastructure, landfill gas management systems and stormwater management facilities.
The role also involves operating small construction equipment such as skid steers and forklifts, interpreting maps and engineering plans, gathering and analyzing monitoring data, and evaluating equipment performance to inform operation, maintenance and repairs.
- Conduct full engineering support work in plan and permit review for compliance with industry requirements.
- Perform inspections to ensure requirements are met and may recommend contractor payment under general supervision.
- Conduct initial quality control of plans, permits, inspections and work performed by contractors.
- Troubleshoot, maintain and assist with the construction of facilities and equipment.
- Survey and conduct inventory assessments of facility and equipment assets for replacement, maintenance and repairs.
- Generate system reports to assist with the evaluation of equipment repairs and assessment of equipment failures.
- Gather and analyze data, formulate reports for implementation in the field.
- Generate work orders and update staff on the progress of asset repair.
- Provide status updates on operating equipment relative to cost, hours of operation, and downtime.
- Analyze inventory and project data to calculate repair and life‑cycle costs.
- Research and evaluate new equipment for potential application.
- Repair and maintain equipment, including cleaning, servicing and replacing parts.
- Develop program quantity and cost estimates.
- Respond to inquiries and complaints from citizens.
- Develop recommended solutions for issues and interpret information to developers, homeowners and other county agencies.
- Calculate fees based on proposed projects established in the Fairfax County Code.
- Prepare preliminary engineering work, including check sheets, plats, etc.; interpret and draft maps and plans.
- Participate in specification development and assist in preparing documents required for contract negotiation.
- Assists bid openings and executes field inspections; maintains projects’ as‑built plans and utilities.
- Apply plan‑reading skills to review, interpret and analyze construction drawings for contract task orders and payment.
- Design simple structures.
- Construct surface water management systems associated with daily landfill operation and erosion and sediment control systems.
- Use measuring equipment in the field to determine depths, elevations, sizes, materials, etc., of agency assets.
- Engage in safe working practices and comply with safety programs and guidelines.
- Report unsafe working conditions and comply with safety competencies.
Skills and Abilities
- Practical application of engineering science and technology, including design, maintenance or production of approved plans and construction drawings.
- Use of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus and/or statistics for problem solving.
- Knowledge of applicable county, state and federal laws, codes and regulations.
- Knowledge of methods and equipment used in engineering, construction and inspection.
- Understanding of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices; ability to comply with safety practices.
- Manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude; ability to perform duties requiring manual labor.
- Ability to prepare accurate drawings and maps and to check plans for conformance to ordinances.
- Ability to prepare accurate quantity and cost estimates.
- Use of logic and reasoning to identify solutions and approaches to problems.
- Skill in compiling, coding, categorizing, calculating, tabulating or verifying information accurately.
- Ability to evaluate plans and specifications for compliance with standards.
