Intern: Mechanical Maintenance Engineer; Fall

What You Will Do

The internship role provides students with the opportunity to apply academic knowledge and skills in a manufacturing environment, and to support and promote graduate career goals through interaction with engineering professionals. Interns participate in professional activities for Volvo New River Valley Plant by working on practical, innovative, and important projects.

Interns work alongside Engineering professionals on projects within their selected organization, gaining structured learning experiences that benefit both the student and Volvo New River Valley Plant.

The purpose of this position is to provide engineering support to the Maintenance Engineering and Operations department and to offer learning opportunities for Mechanical or Electrical Engineering students, or Engineering Technology students.

• Review equipment preventative maintenance checks for effectiveness and suggest improvements to PMs and equipment reliability.
• Review equipment documentation and help create and maintain the equipment library.
• Review recommended spare parts, help determine stocking requirements, and work with our Computerized Maintenance Management System to validate parts.
• Analyze criticality of spare parts for equipment, create spare parts ledgers for production equipment, and apply Failure Mode Effect Analysis methods.
• Learn and apply lean manufacturing principles within the maintenance organization.
• Assist with and create professional and autonomous maintenance calendars.
• Create One Point Lessons as required.
• Create PowerPoint presentations for communication of new project ideas and reports.

• Intermediate Excel skills for data analysis and creating graphs.
• IT skills.
• Experience in Excel, MS Word, AutoCAD, or a similar drafting program.

• Enrolled and pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, Instrumentation, or a related engineering program at an accredited school with at least 30 semester hours completed.
• Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.
• Interns may work up to 30 hours per week during the fall semester.
