Overview
Ethos Energy O&M is recruiting for a motivated Solar Technician to support operations and maintenance activities for a solar facility in the Gloucester, VA area. This role is responsible for helping ensure the site operates safely, reliably, and efficiently through routine inspections, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs.
Key responsibilities include inspecting site equipment, facilities, safety systems, and environmental conditions; performing or coordinating manufacturer-recommended maintenance; resolving technical issues; and supporting maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and maintain strong site performance.
The ideal candidate will have solar operations experience, a strong safety mindset, and working knowledge of environmental compliance, NERC requirements, and applicable industry standards.
Job ResponsibilitiesAs a Solar Technician, you’ll play a key role in keeping the site operating safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all company and regulatory standards. Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Safety and Compliance:
- Promote and uphold the company’s safety culture by following all safety policies and encouraging safe practices among all onsite personnel and contractors.
- Complete pre‑job briefs and required safety documentation before starting any task.
- Support all NERC, environmental, and corporate compliance requirements, including daily, monthly, bi‑annual, and annual reporting.
- Ensure all waste handling and disposal complies with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Operations and Maintenance:
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain solar facility equipment including inverters, transformers, and balance‑of‑plant systems.
- Plan and schedule both corrective and preventive maintenance activities with the Solar Manager.
- Coordinate major maintenance activities to minimize downtime and revenue loss.
- Execute daily site monitoring and respond promptly to alarms or production issues.
- Administration and Reporting:
- Accurately record all work performed in the company’s CMMS platform.
- Assist in preparing annual budgets and monthly operational reports, including availability and production data.
- Participate in remote weekend monitoring rotations for self‑operated sites.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work closely with internal departments to share site data, support projects, and resolve issues.
- Communicate as needed with external agencies, contractors, and landowners.
- Assist with the initiation and follow‑up of insurance claims related to site operations.
Technical
Skills:
The ideal candidate should have strong electrical and mechanical aptitude, with the ability to troubleshoot and repair inverters, transformers, and solar balance‑of‑plant systems. Experience with AC/DC systems, low‑ and medium‑voltage equipment, control circuits, and electrical schematics is preferred. Responsibilities include performing and documenting preventive and corrective maintenance in accordance with OEM and site requirements, using SCADA systems to monitor site performance, and maintaining accurate work order records in CMMS.
The candidate should be comfortable interpreting alarms, reviewing inverter logs and production data, and using diagnostic tools such as multimeters, IR cameras, and insulation resistance testers. A working knowledge of environmental compliance, NERC requirements, waste management, spill prevention, stormwater controls, and site inspection procedures is expected.
Safety and Compliance:
The candidate must demonstrate a strong understanding of LOTO, OSHA 1910, and NFPA 70E electrical safety practices. They should be able to conduct pre‑job briefs, complete Job Hazard Analyses, identify site hazards, and follow all safety and environmental procedures.
Reporting and Communication:
Strong documentation and reporting skills are required, including accurate CMMS entries, safety logs, compliance forms, and support for monthly performance reporting.
